Antioxidant and Free Radicals
If you listen to the radio or watch television then you have more than likely heard about antiaging antioxidant and free radicals. But what do you really know concerning antioxidant and free radicals? If the answer is "not much" then maybe this information can help you to become informed in regards to these things.
Antioxidant defends body cells against damage that can be caused by free radicals. The free radical is produced by the oxidation process in cells. Antioxidants come from two different places: Our food intake and our body. You want to balance out the antioxidant and free radicals. If there are a high number of free radicals compared to antioxidants then damage can occur. When there are more free radicals than antioxidants is when you want to take in antioxidants from foods or supplements.
Antioxidant sources outside the body include daily meals or supplements. The supplements can be taken if you do not consume well balanced meals. These meals would include five fruit portions each day. The supplement for antioxidants should include vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, minerals, zinc, magnesium, copper, carotenoid and flavonoid. Usually if you are taking a multivitamin you are getting enough antioxidant from that and will not need another supplement.
How do you choose an antioxidant supplement? The first step would be to consult your doctor. The doctor can check to find out whether or not you are taking in enough antioxidant. If you are not then she or he can assist you in deciding what the best way will be for you to get enough of the antioxidant.
Now what about free radicals? What causes them? The following are causes of free radicals:
-Too much pressure and stress
-Radiation from sunlight or x-rays
-Pollutant from cigarettes and vehicles
-Foods that contain Hg and Cad
If any of the above are affecting you then it is best to start taking a dietary antioxidant supplement.
Remember that prevention is much easier and much less troubling than curing. Enough antioxidant will help in the anti-aging process, and help in preventing cancer, blood vessel diseases such as coronary heart disease, and degenerative diseases such as Dementia, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. These diseases are no longer limited to the elderly, now people in their middle ages are suffering from them also. So prevent instead of cure, make sure that your antioxidant and free radicals are equal.
