Arthritis can strike at any age and at any time. It is not just a disease of age, especially rheumatoid arthritis. However, you do not have to let it keep you from doing the things you love.
This disease is especially difficult on people who like to be very active. Think about the avid skier who is looking forward to the season and has accumulated all the new Salomon ski equipment in preparation. Then what started out as an occasional annoying ache in the knees really flares up and even walking is agonizing.
Knees are a very common place for arthritis to first be felt, along with the hands. It is easy to take for granted how much you use your legs until leg arthritis starts affecting you. Hand arthritis is even more inhibiting. There are many things you can do, however, to relieve the symptoms of arthritis and continue living your normal life.
There are many different supplements on the market for the aches and pains in the joints that are the main symptoms of arthritis. Two of the most common of these are chondroitin and glucosamine. These have been used for a while so there are many studies showing their usefulness.
Glucosamine is a substance that is in both cartilage and fluid surrounding the joints for cushioning. As cartilage begins to wear down, as it does with osteoarthritis, pain, stiffness and swelling is experienced in the joints. Glucosamine supplementation helps by reducing loss in cartilage and also improving pain and inflammation.
Most supplements contain glucosamine that comes from the shells of shellfish such as crabs and prawns. But what do you do if you are a vegetarian? You do not have to make a choice between your dietary preferences and your joints. There is now a vegetarian glucosamine supplement. Not only is this perfect for vegetarians, it is also of benefit to people who are allergic to shellfish.
A variety of herbal formulas also exists that can help with arthritis. You can just walk into a shop and purchase these on your own. However, it is best if you make an appointment with an herbalist. Herbal formulas tend to work best when they are used for your specific underlying condition rather than just for symptomatic relief.
The most important thing is, you do not need to stop being active because of arthritis. You have several options for alternative supplements and therapies to keep you going. The quicker you get out there and see what is available, the quicker you can be strapping on your skis and enjoying the mountain.
